I have been reading Campbell’s The China Study and Esselstyn’s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease – both absolutely terrific – and I am sick about ’em. The horror is that they both say, very persuasively, that our Western diet is poison. And, in peticular, that meat is horrible for you. Oh lord.
So, last night, we had dinner for twelve and I cooked a terrific tenderloin roast (stuffed with peppers and lord knows what all)…absolutely wonderful. And I didn’t eat a bite. What is to become of me?!
I am sure that I am not about to abandon the western diet – in this, my 76th year – and you probably aren’t going to either. But it’s an interesting notion. A whopping 3/4 of the world’s population, they say, lives almost entirely on veggies and does just fine. But for US to switch gears…not so easy. And Harry tells me that it’s an all-or-nothing deal. That is, you either go whole hog veggie or don’t bother. Which apparently means that only people under grave threat of heart disease or cancer are apt to do it. Interesting, isn’t it. Comments?
I’m reading YNY right now. On 6 May I became a vegetarian at age 57. 3 weeks later I became a vegan – no meat, dairy, eggs, fish. A couple of weeks later I read the Starch Solution by John McDougal, and researched the Engine 2 website – and eliminate ALL oils including olive oil. I have lost 21 lbs between 6 May and 5 July. I am also walking over 3 miles per day, with longest hike a 11 miler with 100 elevation gain.
