Sometimes, fooling around with a serious hobby is all anyone needs. You don’t have to be able to afford great toys but it doesn’t get in the way, either. Try this: I spent the past weekend with a lovely guy who is blissfully happy just fooling around on his sailboat. Which is 60 feet long! And has a crew of three. Yes, he’s a pretty good sport about it and has quite a nice time.

Which is actually a little more surprising than you might think. Lots of rich guys buy toys like this, don ‘t have a clue and don’t use em or have any fun. Not this guy. He is on the big girl about two months a year and goes everywhere from the Carribbean to St. Petersburg! Yup, sailed to the Baltic, then up the Neva to St. Petersburg. Serious passion, serious commitment. Most rich guys don’t know what the hell to do with their toys. This guy knows everything about his sport and is absolutely passionate about it. It’s hard to talk about a guy "deserving" a 60 foot sailboat but this guy almost qualifies.

But guess what makes it fun for him? It’s his passion, not the 60 feet. And that works for all of us.
