Okay, I was wrong last time. Now that I’m used to the altitude, I put on the heart rate monitor again and it’s fairly clear that skiing – most of the time – is not aerobic exercise after all. Did some killer runs and the heart rate did not go over 80%…most of the time – even on a very tough day – it was in the 60’s. “Ballroom skiing”…that is, just cruising with friends on groomed slopes…does not get me into the 60’s. At all. So, there you go.
Hard skiing – and we had a killer day yesterday – does get it up there, and it is also strength training, for your legs anyway. But, in general, it’s not a bad idea to do something evey day in addition to skiing. Sounds wild but true, I think.
